A Few Thoughts on the Mother Archetype

For those of us who carry the archetype of The Mother, life seems to be nicely aligned for us. We are children, we grow up, we get married, have children and mother them. This is so convenient and easy, right?

Well, I’m not so sure. Being a Mother and being one who accommodates the rules for mothering are not the same thing. I’m here to write down a few thoughts on ways this archetype has turned into something other than what it should be.

What is mothering? The care and raising of our young. In our world, however, mothering equals being a housewife and the two are not necessarily related. Many mothers choose not and do not want to be SAHMs (Stay At Home Moms). Many mothers hate cooking and cleaning and yet are more than happy to roll down hills with their young.

I want to begin filtering the Mother through the lens of caring for young rather than the lens of June Cleaver-ing one’s way through life. The two things are not the same.

I can think of some variant ways of mothering that deserve honoring and visibility in our world: Gypsy Mom; Fairie Mom; Career Mom; Taxi Mom; Educator Mom; Geek Mom; Playful Mom; Farm Mom; Volunteer Mom.

Can you think of more types of mothering that have to do with raising young and not to do with living out a prescribed role in society?
